Multi-factor authentication coming. Why you'll be required to change your password on July 11
In late 2021, cybercriminals targeted Greater Vancouver REALTORS® by using stolen information to compromise member accounts and lockboxes.
We found 20 incidents where hackers breached lockboxes and were able to steal property and keys. One Realtor had to spend more than $5,000 to have an entire apartment building rekeyed after one of these incidents.
We were able to work with SentriLock and our login screen provider to help mitigate this attack and develop new security measures, but by this time the damage was already done. By breaching just a few members’ passwords, these cybercriminals were able to cause financial and reputational damage to our profession.
Passwords are the first line of defense against cybercriminals. That’s why, on July 11, we’re updating our password requirements. On this date, you'll be prompted to change your password when you log in through our security screen.
We’re also adding the new Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) system to the login screen starting July 18. MFA is a verification step after you enter your password that asks you to enter a system-generated code sent to you either by text message or email.
It's important to note that MFA won’t trigger every time you log in, only when you:
- first log in as a new REBGV member
- forget your password and are locked out
- change your email or password
These new requirements will help modernize our security infrastructure and will help keep you, your clients, and our MLS® more secure.
