CREA proposes new direction for Realtor.ca

On February 3, the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) shared news with us, and the boards and associations across the country, about their long-term vision for Realtor.ca.

Specifically, CREA is proposing to explore converting Realtor.ca into a technology company that’s owned by CREA and the member real estate boards across Canada. If this direction is taken, the new company would have its own board of directors and management.

CREA contends that this approach would provide access to greater financial investment and technical expertise, which would help Realtor.ca become the most robust, competitive, and modern real estate platform in Canada over the long-term.

Learn more here.

At REBGV, we are working to get more information to assess the merits and to shape our position on this proposal.

CREA has committed to meet with every board and association in Canada to outline its vision in more detail. We look forward to hearing more. We’ll also look for opportunities for CREA to present the business case behind this concept directly to our members so we can all have a clear and common understanding.

CREA recently shared more information they want members to know about this initiative on their website. You'll also find a video featuring CREA CEO Michael Bourque and Chair Jill Oudil.

We’ll share more information as we receive it. If you have comments or questions, I’d appreciate hearing your perspective. You can email us at communications@rebgv.org.

Use our new report to help with BCFSA’s latest data request

Your Board has created a new report in Paragon to help you find the information that the BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) is looking for in their latest data request.

The report will help you find:

  • Residential property sales
  • Home Buyer Rescission Period (HBRP) notices

You can find the report under the Inventory specialty search.

We’ve created a step-by-step guide to help you find residential real property sales, and a guide to help you find HBRP notices.

Please note that BCFSA is looking for this information based on “firm contract date”, defined as when subjects are removed.  This is different from the “sold” date in the MLS®. Since the MLS® has no standardized way to log the firm contract date, these reports are intended to help you narrow down what properties you need to search for.

Questions? Contact Help Desk at 604-730-3020 or support@rebgv.org.

What is BCFSA requesting?

BCFSA is looking for information on residential sales and HBRP requests between February 19 and March 18, 2023.

This information needs to be sent in a workbook format that they provide.

Questions about the data request? Contact BCFSA at advisor@bcfsa.ca, or (604) 660-3555.

Encourage your salespeople to complete our member satisfaction survey

This past Tuesday, February 7, all REBGV members received an email with a link to our 2023 member survey. The email came from Alec Milne of Framework Partners, the company conducting the survey for us.

Anyone who completes the survey will be entered into a draw to win one of five $100 Amazon gift cards or one of fifty $10 Tim Horton’s or Starbucks gift cards!

This is your opportunity to tell us how we’re doing, and your feedback is crucial to our long-term planning. Don’t miss the opportunity to share your thoughts with us.

Please encourage all the members in your office to complete our member survey today. I appreciate it!

Standards Matter podcast 7: A Matter of Reputation

As you know, REALTORS® are facilitators, who work in a unique cooperative, yet competitive business environment. But what happens when two Realtors have different ideas of what constitutes “service”?

In the latest episode of our Standards Matter podcast, we look at cooperation and reputation, and how frustration over a colleague’s business model can damage reputations and result in fines.

This episode also features advice from our Ethics Guy® Kim Spencer on how to deal with conflict with other Realtors.

Wishing Eileen Day a happy retirement

We wished a happy retirement to Eileen Day last week as she departed the organization after 23 years of dedicated service.

A valued member of our senior leadership team for over two decades, she was instrumental in helping shape our strategy, execution, and service innovation work.

Eileen served as REBGV’s Director of Communication from 2000 to 2014, then as our Chief Operating Officer from 2015 to 2023.

On a personal note, I’m grateful for the good fortune of having Eileen’s support and guidance as I’ve adapted to this role since joining REBGV in November 2021.

She made countless friends within the profession during her tenure. Please join me in thanking Eileen for her many contributions and wishing her the very best in the next chapter of her life.

Proposed amendment to REBGV's Banking Regulation

With Eileen’s retirement as COO, REBGV’s Board of Directors propose to amend Regulation 6.1 to remove the Chief Operating Officer as signing authority and add the Vice-President of Finance. The Board of Directors will vote to adopt the amendment at a meeting later in February.

Review the proposed change.

If you have comments or questions regarding this amendment, please contact me directly at jking@rebgv.org or 604-730-3006.
